Annapolis is the capital of the state of Maryland and the county seat of Anne Arundel County. According to the 2010 United States Census report the city had a total population of 38,394 residents. The city is located on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River. Annapolis is part of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area, located 26 miles south of Baltimore and about 29 miles east of Washington, D.C..
